The Juicer Review is Out... Oscar Neo & Hippocrates Out-Perform EVERY Juicer on the Market!

Independent testing body, Choice, has released it's latest Juicer Reviews. Choice is an expert, unbiased consumer information "watchdog", who, for over 50 years has been providing credible and scientific testing on a vast range of products. In the report, both the Hippocrates Plus 1305 and the Oscar Neo 1000 out-performed EVERY other juicer tested including both Cold Press and Centrifugal!

Performance scores are based on a few different factors after juicing the same amount of carrots, apples, oranges, watermelon and pineapple in all juicers tested:

  • The juicers capabilities when juicing a range of textures and consistences in produce
  • The quality of the juice - a smooth, pulp-free juice with minimal grain or froth is ideal
  • The quantity of juice produced - the yield of juice from the same amount of fruits and vegetables

Based on performance alone, the Oscar Neo and Hippocrates Plus out-shone EVERY other juicer included in the test (both cold press and centrifugal). The Oscar Neo scored an impeccable 95and the Hippocrates Plus scoring a 94, the two highest performance scores of the test.

We feel a 'Performance' score is a very important factor when selecting a juicer, in particular a Cold Press Juicer. The consumer has made a conscious decision to purchase a "healthy juicer" rather than the typical Centrifugal Juicer and therefor requires the juicer to perform particularly based on the actual juice it produces, rather than other factors.

The user would be looking for juice which is nutritionally beneficial, remains fresh or "alive" for longer and is smooth and froth/foam free in consistency.

As such, we feel the weighting of 'Performance' at only 30% of Overall Score is not significant enough in the case of cold press juicers. 'Ease of Use' made up for the other 70% of the score.

Let's Look at the Scores for 2013...

Performance Score = 30% (of Overall Score)

Ease of Use Score = 70% (of Overall Score)

Juicer Type Overall Score (%) Ease of Use Score (%) Performance Score (%)
Greenpower Hippocrates GPT-1305 Twin Gear, Cold Press, Horizontal 76 68 94
Oscar Neo DA 1000 Single Gear, Cold Press, Horizontal 73 63 95
Oscar VitalMax 900 Single Gear, Cold Press, Horizontal 73 66 90
Champion 2000+ Masticating, Horizontal 69 62 85
Omega Vert Single Gear, Cold Press, Vertical 75 67 93

Previous Juicer Review by Choice

This is the second of the Juicer Reviews carried out by Choice, the first was carried out in 2007. In the previous test, both 'Performance' and 'Ease of Use' were weight evenly at 50% of the Overall Score. The previous test was substantially more extensive with testing also carried out on nutritional claims made by manufactures also. The current test (2013) was predominately based on the juicer as a product with references to the 2007 test.

Key Findings from the Test:

  • Non-Centrifugal (cold press) juicers extract more nutrients, in some cases double or triple as much!
  • Juice from a cold press juicer lasts for up to or more than 48 hours
  • Centrifugal juicers have large/bulky parts making them more difficult to clean in a kitchen sink

Health Claims Tested by Choice

"Manufacturers claim cold-press-style machines’ juice is more nutritious and that it’ll stay fresh and tasty for up to 48 hours. According to the makers, the gentle, slow-turning action of a cold press machine produces a greater quantity of juice, which retains more vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytochemicals and fibre than that produced by other methods. Their argument is that high-speed centrifugal juicers heat up the juice, allow air to enter and therefore cause damage to some of the perishable nutrients."

And the result? Choice found the manufacturers' claims are true... Vitality 4 Life's range of Cold Press Juicers are nutritionally more beneficial than a common Centrifugal Juicer!

  Centrifugal Juicers Non-centrifugal Juicers Comments
Less oxidation The apple juice from the centrifugal juicers separated and went brown a few minutes after juicing
More fibre The Greenpower Hippocrates & the Oscar Vital Max scored the highest at 90% on performance
More nutritious The Greenpower Hippocrates’ juice contained well over double the beta-carotene and alpha-carotene of the juice from every other juicer in the test
Greater quantity of juice Although the cold pressed juicers did produce more juice, the Healthstart Compact scored the lowest for the juice produced because its carrot juice was a little grainy and it produced a lower quantity
Easier cleaning All the centrifugal juicers have large, bulky parts that are hard to fit into a domestic sink for cleaning
Stays fresh for 48 hours The juice from the non-centrifugal juicers didn’t separate, smelt fresh and looked palatable and green after 48 hours in the fridge

Let's Look at the Nutritional Analysis

Choice tested the nutritional claims, by sending a sample of carrot juice from each juicer to a lab to be analysed for minerals (potassium and calcium), Vitamin C and the phytochemicals alpha and beta-carotene, to see if the non-centrifugal juicers did extract or retain more nutrients.

The juice from all the non-centrifugal juicers contained about double — in some cases triple — the calcium of the juices produced by the centrifugal juicers

"The Greenpower Hippocrates’ juice contained well over double the beta-carotene and alpha-carotene of the juice from every other juicer in the test."

Potassium was much the same for all juices tested. Vitamin C quantities were too low to measure accurately.

Does the Juice Really Stay Fresh?

A sample of apple juice from each juicer was refrigerated for 48 hours, then evaluated for colour, overall appearance, smell and texture, to test the claim that juice from non-centrifugal juicers holds up longer.

The apple juice from the centrifugal juicers separated and went brown a few minutes after juicing. After two days it was noticeably deteriorating, didn’t smell fresh, had a hard froth on top and a layer of sediment at the bottom — indicating a higher level of oxidation.

By contrast, the juice from the non-centrifugal juicers didn’t separate, smelt fresh and looked palatable and green after 48 hours in the fridge, indicating less oxidation.

And the reason why? It’s possible that the oxidation or friction from higher-speed centrifugal juicers turns the juice bad faster than the slow-turning machines.

Choice Outlines the Benefits of a Cold Press Juicer:

  • Nutritionally speaking, a Cold Press Juice is far more superior than a Centrifugal Juicer
  • If you prefer to store juice rather than drinking it straight away, this may be the juicer for you!
  • You can use some of them (such as the Oscar Neo and Hippocrates) as Food Processors - mincing, grinding, pasta/noodles, soy milk, but butters, baby food, ice cream
  • A Cold Press Juicer can juice wheatgrass and herbs
  • They have fewer parts and are easier to clean
  • The warranties are generally longer than those for Centrifugal Juicers
  • Most advanced single-gear cold press juicer
  • 3 Step Auger Crushing System
  • NEW "Ultem Tough" parts, with extended warranty of 10 years!
  • NEW Pulp Adjustment Nozzle
  • MORE juice and LESS pulp!
