Including raw food in school lunch boxes is the biggest challenge I hear for most mums. With most schools banning nuts, it is apparent that including raw goodies in the lunch box is become harder and harder.  But never fear!  I am working on my next book ‘The Raw Food  Kids Lunch Box’ which is going to have lots and lots of nut free recipes in it too:)

But to get you started I have whipped up these yummy Nut Free raw bliss balls – perfect for the school lunchbox. And they are sooooo yummy! Made with buckwheat instead of nuts.

Buckwheat is a seed of a fruit. In fact, buckwheat is not related to wheat at all, it comes from the sorrel, knotweed and rhubarb family.

One of the distinguishing features of buckwheat is that it does not contain any gluten thus making it a great alternative for people with an intolerance to it. It has a high protein content.

To activate buckwheat, we soak it, wash and rinse it, then dehydrate it at low temperatures 115F.  This allows for easier digestion and absorption of nutrients. We make a big batch and store then in our mason jars for when we are ready to use them.

  • Once you have activated the buckwheat. Process into a fine powder using your optimum blender.  Or you can purchaseactivated buckwheat for those who are time poor or do not have a dehydrator.
  • Place all dry ingredients including buckwheat into a food processor and process until combined. Add in dates, coconut oil, coconut nectar and process further. Slowly add in water until the mixture becomes sticky. You may not need to use all the water so add it in slowly.
  • Simply roll into small balls and coat with coconut.
  • And there you have beautiful yummy Raw Nut Free Bliss Balls ready for the school lunches!  we store ours in the freezer so the coconut oil sets, and makes them firm.

Issy wanted to make cupcakes, so we had the little cup cakes out and we simply placed the bliss balls into them! It was fun for her and she had a great old time! Messy… but its so lovely to see her in the kitchen wanting to make yummy raw food with mum!
